The Ferreira de Castro museum opened in June 1982, and although easy to miss, it is well worth finding. The museum is an interesting insight into the life and works of one of Portugal's most famous authors.
Ferreira de Castro left an indelible mark on literature with his captivating works. Born in 1898 in the small village of Oliveira de Azeméis, near Porto, his upbringing in rural Portugal profoundly influenced his writing style. Castro's most famous novel, A Selva (The Forest), is a masterpiece of Portuguese literature, drawing on his experiences as an immigrant labourer on a Brazilian rubber plantation. This gripping tale explores themes of human resilience, survival, and the clash of cultures.
Ferreira de Castro's literary legacy continues to resonate with readers worldwide, as his works have been translated into numerous languages. His vivid descriptions and insightful narratives offer a window into the human condition, transcending geographical and cultural boundaries. From the lush landscapes of the Amazon to the complexities of human relationships, Castro's writing remains as relevant and captivating today as it was during his lifetime.

When he returned to Portugal in 1919, he worked as a journalist and was an avid opponent of Salazar's authoritarian Estado Novo regime. Ferreira de Castro documented his worldwide travels in his book A Volta ao Mundo at the outset of World War II. Before his death, in Porto, he proclaimed his wish to be interned in Sintra and donated his large collection of private artefacts, books, and literary works to the town.
Across two floors the exhibit chronicles his life and works in chronological order across three separate themes:
• His childhood and his growing up in Oliveira de Azeméis.
• His life in Brazil and the influences from the rain forest and Belém.
• His return to Portugal, his life as a journalist, and finally his later years and his global successes.

The Ferreira de Castro Museum is a ten-minute stroll from the old town centre on the road leading to Quinta da Regaleira and through a gateway on the right-hand side just before the Lawrences Hotel.

This 150-year-old residence is surrounded by gardens with a swimming pool and offers a view of the Moorish Castle. All rooms are tastefully decorated and some have unique bathrooms with colourfully painted tiles. Wooden floors and soft colours are standard in each of the rooms at Hotel Sintra Jardim. They also have a work desk and a satellite TV and some rooms have French balconies or garden views.
Breakfast is served in the dining room with its cottage-style windows. The garden with its refreshing pool offers a quiet setting to read a book. Younger visitors can enjoy themselves with table tennis and the small playground.
