Commissioned by King Ferdinand II for himself and his second wife, Elise Hensler (the future Countess of Edla), construction of the chalet spanned from 1864 to 1869. Despite its alpine-like facade, the exterior plasterwork cleverly imitates wooden planks, while the interior boasts intricate cork embellishments adorning doors, windows, eaves, and verandas. Visitors are treated to a visual feast of mural paintings, stucco work, and glazed decorative tiles within.
Thanks to meticulous restoration efforts, the chalet has been reopened to the public, allowing guests to admire its original splendour. The Countess herself played a pivotal role, collaborating with King Ferdinand and Queen Amélia in the transformation and enhancement of the adjacent Pena Park, a lush green oasis awaiting exploration.

Chalet of the Countess of Edla
The lush gardens surrounding the Chalet of the Countess of Edla boast a rich tapestry of exotic plants and trees sourced from far-flung locales like Australia and New Zealand. Within the expansive grounds, visitors can explore the Countess's Fernery, the Restharrow Garden, a charming Pergola, tranquil lakes, and the intriguing Chalet Stones, a collection of majestic granite boulders.
Enhancing the allure of the park are breathtaking vistas that encompass the iconic landmarks of the Moorish Castle, Pena Palace, Cruz Alta, and the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. Inspired by the prevailing Romanticism of their era, the royal couple ingeniously leveraged the natural landscape to craft one of Portugal's most enchanting and picturesque parks, providing themselves with a serene sanctuary away from the demands of public life.
Recognising its historical and cultural significance, the Chalet of the Countess of Edla and its captivating gardens were designated as a Property of Public Interest in 1993, ensuring their preservation for future generations to enjoy and cherish.
